Introduction
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2022 to human rights advocate Ales Bialiatski from Belarus, the Russian Human Rights Organisation Memorial and the Ukrainian Human Rights Organisation. Ales Bialiatski is the president of the Viasna Human Rights Centre in Minsk, the capital of Belarus. He has devoted his professional life to documenting human rights violations in his home country: he was present at all major protests against Soviet rule during 1989-1991, when mass demonstrations led by youth activists shook Central European countries with their energy and courage. These events marked a turning point in post-war history.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awards a prize annually in recognition of outstanding contributions in 5 categories: Literature, Economics/Business, Physiology or Medicine and Physics / Chemistry / Earth Sciences. The committee also selects individuals who have made a significant impact on world affairs through their efforts at peace building or human rights work by awarding them with honorary prizes each year.
Ales Bialiatski is the president of the Viasna Human Rights Centre in Minsk, the capital of Belarus. He has devoted his professional life to documenting human rights violations in his home country.
Bialiatski was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on documenting and exposing crimes against humanity committed by pro-government forces during the 2016 protests that led to President Alexander Lukashenko’s fourth term as president being invalidated by a court ruling last December 2018.
The Russian Human Rights Organisation Memorial was established by intellectuals and human rights activists in 1989. Memorial has played a key role in establishing international contacts and providing documentation covering areas of Soviet history that were long concealed by state propaganda in Russia.
Memorial is one of several human rights organisations operating under the umbrella of Moscow Helsinki Group (MHG), which consists of three separate organisations: Memorial, Moscow Helsinki Group Human Rights Centre (MHGHRC) and also Regional Centers for Human Rights Studies.
In addition to its archival work, Memorial has been active in documenting human rights violations and gross injustices during and after armed conflicts by systematically collecting records and testimony about political repression and crimes against humanity committed by the Stalinist regime as well as other forms of abuse inside Russia today.
Memorial has played a key role in establishing international contacts, providing documentation covering areas of Soviet history that were long concealed by state propaganda in Russia. It is due to this activity that there exists a large collection on Russian prisoners-of-war (POWs) who died during World War II; they are currently kept at the Central Archive for Political Prisoners in Moscow.
At a time when hundreds of thousands of people are being forced from their homes and subjected to torture, mutilation and murder in armed conflicts around the world, remembrance of past atrocities is crucial if we are to prevent the ongoing suffering inflicted on defenceless populations.
The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded once a year to individuals and organizations who have contributed to international peace and security. It was established by Alfred Nobel in his will and has been awarded since 1901.
The prize is awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which consists of five members appointed for life by Norwegian parliamentarians on the nomination of their fellow MPs.
